Between meals, or to have on hand as "treats" I use the Peelu chewing gum - peelu tree fibers have been used to clean teeth in Africa in the absence of toothbrushes and the Xylitol (natural sugar alcohol) in the gum causes the bacteria to lose its grip and slide off the teeth. The Vanilla-Mint is a lighter mint flavor and the Spearmint is a stronger mint flavor.

Jini Says: Ideally, you should get your digestive enzymes from your food (raw foods, fermented foods, homemade yoghurt, etc) and from your body's own production. However, for those times when you just cannot get enough natural enzymes, or you need some additional support as your own body's production is not up to par, I have found these high quality, natural enzymes in both a capsule and chewable form that you can eat with or after meals.

Many digestive enzymes are cultured on aspergillus oryzae (mold), but then are not filtered properly and you end up ingesting the spores - not good for someone with unbalanced or susceptible gut flora to begin with!

But these Houston Enzymes derived from Aspergillus have been purified from the fungal matter using 8 to 12 different methods of purification. No fungal matter is present in this enzyme product. If you have a known allergy to Aspergillus proteins, then caution should be used in taking any fungal-derived enzyme product, however, the allergenic portions of Aspergillus are usually those parts of the fungi removed from the enzymes during processing.

Give enzymes with the first few bites of the meal or just prior to mealtime. But more important is to take the enzyme, if not at the beginning, then during or after eating. Food stays in the stomach for up to 3 hours, therefore, introducing enzymes anytime during the meal will still provide benefits.

If one is a "grazer", that is, eats constantly during the day, you may wish to give the enzymes at fixed dosing intervals, such as every 4 or 5 hours during the day.

*Remember, that if you're having more than 3 bowel movements per day, you must not swallow pills/capsules (gut transit time is too fast) - in that case, best to use the chewables.

Jini Says: Here is an assortment of healthy oils that are beneficial - not just for people with digestive diseases, but for ALL people. Every member of my family takes the cod liver oil, and the high vitamin butter oil. And we use Udo's oil to make salad dressings.
If your disease is active, or if you're pregnant or lactating, then you need high amounts of each of these beneficial oils.
Also, for cooking, it's best to use extra virgin olive oil and unrefined coconut oil - available at your local grocery store. At any time, only use cold-pressed oils.

Here's a brief summary of each of these oils and why they're so good for you:

Udo's Oil: This is the most fantastic oil blend I’ve found. It was developed by Udo Erasmus, PhD, who wrote the book, Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill. It contains so many of the essential oils and fatty acids that we need for optimum functioning in many parts of our body: hair, skin, nails, brain development and functioning, joints, GI tract, etc. Again, this is a supplement that every person should take daily – but especially people with IBS and IBD, and pregnant and postpartum women.

Jini Says: We have been testing this formula for healing internal and external hemorrhoids over at JPT Wellness Circle and after many good reports, I'm pleased to make it available for everyone! I personally had internal hemorrhoids since the birth of my daughter six years ago. The bioflavonoids (as advised in Listen To Your Gut) definitely helped shrink them and reduce their severity, but they never completely disappeared. Jini Says: ThyroPlex is a fantastic combination natural hormone support product developed by Dr. Jonathan V. Wright, MD. I really like Dr. Wright's approach which views all the glands as domino-linked together. Therefore, when resolving a hormonal imbalance, it makes sense to treat all the glands (which produce hormones). If you just treat one gland, or focus on one hormone, you could throw the rest of your glands/hormones out of balance.

We talked a lot about the need for balancing hormones in chronic illness in my teleseminar with Dr. Wendy Ellis - a colleague of Dr. Wright's, who works with him at his clinic in Washington. Of course, it's ideal (and recommended) to consult a hormone specialist and have your hormones tested properly. But for those who can't afford this, taking ThyroPlex (and often natural progesterone cream) may be enough to resolve hormonal imbalance, or at least make a significant difference.

Natural progesterone is useful for treating infertility, uterine fibroids, breast lumps, estrogen-dominance, and postpartum depression, irritability or anger. Natural progesterone is also used to treat men with prostate problems.

If you have chronic illness, or are over age 40, there's a pretty good chance you've burned out your adrenals and your thyroid is unbalanced (usually low thyroid - hypothyroid). Hence ThyroPlex usually works well for most people.

Jini Says: Immune strengtheners are crucial for anyone struggling with chronic illness or acute illness (e.g. cold or flu). In chronic illness, these substances help the body return to a state of balance by supporting the efforts of the immune system to regulate itself.

An important thing to remember with potent substances like these, is not to use them every day, long-term. A good rule of thumb is to use them for 2-3 weeks, then take a break for a week or two. Then use again - but only if needed - and keep cycling on and off like this for however long you need them.

I also give all of these substances to my kids during flu season, so they are safe for all ages (in my experience). Breastfeeding moms can take these herbs themselves and they will automatically go through to the breastmilk. Just be careful with Astragalus as if baby has a fever, it can increase the fever. Consult your naturopathic doctor about using wild oregano with children under the age of five, or during pregnancy, breastfeeding.

The creme de la creme, best of the best, mineral product we carry is the BONE SUPPORT - nanoparticle-sized minerals. MAGNESIUM However, if you have a tendency towards diarrhea, then you need to be careful about ingesting (orally) too much magnesium in the typical oral powder form (nanoparticle magnesium is just fine, however). Did you know that calcium reduces polyp growth and risk? Clinical trials at Dartmouth focused on 913 patients with diagnosed polyps who were given either 1200 mg of calcium carbonate or a placebo. Repeated colonoscopies after one an four years revealed that those who took calcium had a decreasd risk of all types of colon polyps. The most profound effect was on advanced polyps - calcium users had one-third the risk of those taking the placebo. - J Natl Cancer Inst. 2204 Jun 16;96(12):921-5 The problem with traditional calcium (and other minerals) supplements is that they are poorly absorbed. Some minerals can be excreted via urine. But some, like calcium remain in the blood and contribute to artherosclerosis. For this reason, although they are more expensive, you may want to consider a nano-particle or angstrom-sized mineral supplement which is 100% absorbed.

Capsules or Powders?: Take the powders if you’re experiencing diarrhea (or more than 3 bowel movements per day), heartburn, or upper GI problems.

If your bowel movements are normal or constipated, you can take the capsules, if you prefer. The regular capsules (Megadophilus, Bifido Factor, Digesta-Lac) also contain the beneficial growth medium (or supernatent). The Healthy Trinity capsules do not contain much supernatent. See the Probiotic Supplementation section of my book, "Listen To Your Gut" for more information on why you may want to consume the growth medium (supernatant) along with the beneficial bacteria.

Jini Says: The challenge with shower filters is finding one that does a good job of filtering out the nasties, but doesn't decimate your water pressure.

Those of use that like showers, want a robust, invigorating spray coming from our showerhead. So it's a matter of balance; filter out as much of the harmful chemicals as you can, whilst still maintaining water pressure.

So, I have personally tested (and used) each of the shower filters listed below. If you read through the descriptions, you will find that they filter out: Chlorine, Hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell), Iron oxide (rust water), Dust, Sediment, Odors and balance the pH of your shower water.

After using these filters to remove all the chlorine from our bath and shower, my son Hugo's eczema started getting better immediately and completely cleared in a few weeks.

However, if you have a respiratory illness, then you may want to pay a bit extra for a comprehensive filter that removes THMs (trihalomethanes) and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) as well. Jini Says: Here is a selection of skin care products, these are my favorites, and the ones I use myself and for my family. As you know from my book, Listen To Your Gut, the skin is the body's largest organ and highly absorptive. So anything you put on your skin is directly and rapidly absorbed into your bloodstream. Therefore, it's VERY important to make sure your skin products are toxin-free.

If you want a lighter body lotion, then go with something from the Deep Steep line. The natural fragrance oils are also lighter with Deep Steep, so if you're sensitive to scent, then you may prefer this line for that reason. If you have dry skin or need a heavier body cream or hand cream, then the Aubrey Organics line is best. The natural fragrance oils in this line are stronger though, so if you're sensitive to scent, go with either the Unscented or the Collagen & Almond lotions as they have the mildest scent.

Personally, I use both the Deep Steep (for my body) AND Aubrey lotions (for my hands, or periodic deep moisturizing). I prefer the lighter level of scent in the Deep Steep line for daily use, but the Aubrey Collagen & Almond is mild yet a nice fragrance for when I need a deeper moisturize. I use the stronger Aubrey Rosa Mosqueta when I want to smell "perfumed" - for a special night.

Unfortunately, even body creams and lotions that are labeled "organic" are not necessarily toxin or preservative-free, you need to carefully read the label on each and every one. However, if you buy any of these products here, I've already done the label screening and tried these products personally - and they are my favorites, both for purity and performance. I hope you like them too!

I have also included the top oils that you need to take internally to see a difference in the health of your skin (less dry, smoother, softer, less wrinkles, etc.). For myself, I take cod liver oil (along with my Vitamin D in winter) every day and I take Udo's about 4 times a week - I also eat lots of other healthy fats, like organic butter, organic olive oil and organic raw coconut oil. If you're not using a lot of these other food oils (the cell membrane is 40% fat), then you would need to take 1 - 2 tablespoons of Udo's oil daily as well to see results in your skin, hair, and nails.

Jini Says: Stevia is a 100% natural plant extract that is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar. It is the best alternative to sugar on the market and preliminary studies suggest it’s actually beneficial for diabetics. Use (a tiny amount of it) wherever you would normally use sugar (beverages, cooking, baking, etc.). The taste of Stevia depends on how pure the extract is and whether there are any fillers added to it. The brand I’ve selected is of the highest/purest quality, with no added fillers.

If you want the stevia taste to be completely undetectable in your baking, then use half regular sweetener (eg. honey, maple syrup, rapadura or turbinado sugar) and use stevia for the other half. A good rule of thumb is 1 tsp stevia extract = 1 cup sugar. So, for example, if your cake recipe calls for 1 cup of sugar, then use 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 tsp stevia.

NOTE: The difference in pricing of the stevia products in this category is because one is WHOLE stevia leaf (which is less sweet and has a stronger "licorice" aftertaste) and the more expensive one is white, stevia EXTRACT (which has a very slight aftertaste and is the sweetest, hence you use a lot less - I prefer this extract for all my baking, hot chocolate, etc).

Jini Says: You have a number of options here for alleviating chronic diarrhea or constipation, depending on what your body tolerates and what you're trying to accomplish:

People find psyllium seed or the MetaCleanse (contains psyllium along with flaxseed and bentonite) useful for relieving diarrhea as it bulks up the stool by absorbing the excess liquid, thus reducing the frequency and urgency of bowel movements – this is especially helpful for Short Bowel Syndrome. Others prefer L-Glutamine - which taken on an empty stomach causes the bowel to absorb excess water and at the same time is a primary nutrient for the intestinal lining.

Psyllium and MetaCleanse are helpful for constipation because they attract water to your stools, thus keeping them soft and easier to pass (you also have to make sure you're drinking enough water!).

If you want to simultaneously detox, then combine your psyllium with bentonite clay in equal parts and drink lots of water. But do not use bentonite long-term (about two weeks at time is usually sufficient) as it adsorbs and carries out all microbes (i.e. both good and bad bacteria). Or, again, you could just use MetaCleanse, since it also contains bentonite (although in much smaller amounts, so it's safe for ongoing use).

Bentonite clay is a volcanic ash, containing many minerals, it is very mild/bland tasting - so easy to drink. Good quality Bentonite Clay should be grey/cream in color. It has a very fine, velveteen feel and is odorless and non-staining.

Bentonite Clay is primarily used for two reasons: it is good at firming up stool and alleviating diarrhea and it is also an excellent detoxification agent.

The value of montmorillonite (the active ingredient in Bentonite) lies in its ability to adsorb (not absorb) many times its own weight and volume in a liquid medium. It has a predominantly negative charge that is capable of attracting many kinds of positively charged particles. Bentonite Clay's structure assists it in attracting and soaking up toxins and contaminants on its exterior wall and then drawing them into the interior center of the clay where they are held and then excreted out in your stool.

It is this sponge-like quality of the Clay that makes it a good anti-diarrhea substance whilst detoxing your body! However, the only drawback is that montmorillonite has been shown in studies to also draw bacteria out of the intestines. So, if your bacterial flora is unhealthy, this is a good thing. But, if you’re supplementing with probiotics, trying to implant a healthy bacterial flora, then you certainly don’t want to be ingesting large amounts of a substance that’s going to pull all these good bacteria out of your gut as well! Therefore, I would only use Bentonite Clay short-term, or in small amounts and then get yourself on the high dose probiotic supplementation that will address the root-cause of your diarrhea.

For two weeks at a time, every so often, bentonite clay provides a good, but gentle detoxification – and then follow with oral probiotics or Jini’s Probiotic Retention Enema.

Your best option for alleviating diarrhea or constipation may be to use the MetaCleanse blend since it contains a combination of psyllium, flaxseed and a small amount of bentonite clay per serving. Many readers find that the combination (synergy) works better than any of these bulking agents on their own. I would agree!

The Best Multivitamin: If you can tolerate or need iron, then an excellent multivitamin to get is the Nature’s Way Prenatal (even if you’re a male and/or not pregnant!) – it automatically contains many of the nutrients that people with IBS/IBD need: extra B vitamins, extra Vitamin A, Vitamin C in mineral ascorbate form, etc. And because it's a "prenatal" all the vitamins and minerals are in forms that are easily tolerated and gentle on the stomach. Also, another big reason to buy the Prenatal as your multivitamin (as long as you want iron) is that for some reason, the price is a LOT cheaper than similar products that are not labeled "prenatal". Don't ask me why, but I suspect it's some kind of marketing decision affecting the pricing. Whatever the reason, I urge you to take advantage of it!
